Union County was the 88th county formed in Georgia.  It was originally inhabited by Native Americans and was carved from Cherokee County territory during the Georgia Land Lottery of 1832.  Contrary to popular belief, Union County was not named for its support of the North in the Civil War, but rather was named for an emerging political party called the "Union Party" which was in existence some 28 years before the Civil War started.
