Toombs County was created August 18, 1905 from portions of Emanuel, Tattnall and Montgomery counties. It was the 142nd county formed in Georgia and was named for Robert Toombs, the Confederacy's Brigadier General and Secretary of State. named for Nelson Tift, who helped found the city of Albany, served as that city's Mayor and later served as a Congressman. Toombs county is most known for its sweet Vidalia Onions.
