Taliaferro County (pronounced "oliver" preceded by a "t"), Georgia's 65th county, was formed by an act of the Georgia Legislature meeting on December 24, 1825. It was created from parts of Wilkes, Greene, Hancock, Oglethorpe and Warren Counties.  Taliaferro County was named for Revolutionary War hero and U.S. Congressman Benjamin Taliaferro of Virginia.
