Lee County was one of the counties ceded by the Creek Indians in the 1825 Treaty of Indian Springs. The counties' boundaries were created by the Georgia General Assembly on June 9, however, they were not named until December 14, 1825. Georgia's 68 county was named for Richard Henry Lee who proposed in the Continental Congress that the colonies declare themselves free and independent; he was the father of Robert E. Lee and was noted for capturing Augusta from the British in 1781.
