One of the original
eight counties in Georgia, Effingham
County was created February 5, 1777
by State Constitution. When
first created, it was one of the
largest of the eight counties;
however, since that time, a number
of other counties or portions of
counties, have been cut out of
Effingham.
Effingham County was
named for Lord Effingham who, prior
to the Revolutionary War, served as
a colonel in the British Army.
When the conflict began and he was
ordered to take up arms against the
colonists, he refused to do so
because of his strong belief in
colonial rights.
